Invest in Yourself Before You Expect Anyone Else To

Close your eyes and visualize the healthiest version of yourself. How does that person move through their day? What do they buy at the grocery store? Now go back one year. What's actually changed to move you toward that person? For most of us, the honest answer is not much, and the reason usually comes down to one word: investment.

The Expectation Gap

We ask a lot of other people. We want our partner to believe in us, our boss to see our worth, our friends to show up. But most of us don't extend that same investment to ourselves. You can't energetically expect other people to believe in you if you don't believe in yourself first. The bridge between who you are and who you want to be requires action and investment, not doing the same thing over and over and hoping for a different result.

What "Investing in Yourself" Actually Means

At the surface, investing sounds like it's about money. It can be, but that's often the smallest piece of it. Really it's about time, energy, and mental focus. That's where a lot of advice gets it wrong, telling you to just buy the next program, the next piece of gear, the next fix. Wanting to surf doesn't mean buying a garage full of boards first. It means investing in the belief that you can do the scary thing, and letting that belief drive the action.

The Rental Car Problem

People trash rental cars because they're not theirs, even when they've paid for them. A lot of us treat our own goals the same way. We dump a little money into a program, don't build any real ownership in it, and move on to the next thing in a week. Money is the currency of commitment, but money alone doesn't create commitment. It has to be paired with the internal decision that this is actually yours.

Clint's Phone Call Problem

For years, Clint dreaded making phone calls, even ordinary ones, like scheduling a delivery pickup. He'd look up the number and spend up to an hour running an entire imaginary conversation in his head first, rehearsing every possible response, before he ever dialed. Most of the time, he just wouldn't make the call. What actually changed it wasn't willpower, it was collapsing the time between thinking about something and doing it. Look up the number. Make the call. Don't negotiate with yourself first.

Johnna's Investment Story

Johnna's own version of this started with weight loss and lifting to heal her metabolism, which meant investing first in time, hours of research, three days a week at the gym growing into six. Then investing in programming, because other people knew more than she did. Eventually she started writing her own programs, got good at it, and people started asking her to train them, which is exactly when imposter syndrome showed up: how could she train anyone when she still had weight to lose herself? Getting certified to actually train people was terrifying. She had to act despite the fear, not after it went away. That same pattern carried through to writing the very first version of the parasite protocol by hand, and now to rebuilding REBUILT into its current, most coherent version yet.

Fitness as the Gateway Drug

Fitness tends to be the gateway to everything else. Show up for yourself physically, and it bleeds into other decisions without you consciously trying, the extra drink you skip because you're training in the morning, the group of people you start stepping away from because you'd rather go work out. It's compounding investment. You don't have to fix all seven things wrong in your life at once. Pick one, invest in that, and let it ripple outward.

Pick One Thing

If you've been sitting on a program, a trainer, a gym membership, waiting for the fear to go away first, it won't. Buy it. Book it. Make the call. Then let the nervous action be the thing that actually closes the gap.
